Design a health & wellness product that solves a specific problem.
Solution Summary
A mechanical stretching assistant designed for runners stretching by themselves.
Driving insight
I learned from Georgia Tech Track & Field distance runners that partner stretching was the most effective form of stretching, but they are often forced to stretch by themselves due to time constraints.
SOLUTION
Use Case
Tether is a battery-powered, clutched motor that tightens its straps with a torque limit to prevent injury. Athletes strap on the bands to their limbs and choose their "resistance limit" (how much torque they would like the motor to max out at) and the amount of time for the stretch.
Draw out strap to desired length
Fasten first strap around limb
Fasten second strap
Position body in preparation for stretch
Set resistance limit and start device
Maintain form while Tether tightens
Manufacture
Tether is made from a hard plastic housing and an inner mechanism very similar to a drill choke. The resistance limit dial mechanically changes the clutch, and a spring coil maintains a small amount of pull that makes the straps retract when not in use. The rechargeable battery powers the motor and the microcontroller that controls the length of time.
