BOOGIE BIKES LOCK HOLDER (FORMERLY BOOGIE BIKES)

Project Brief

Design a low-profile, easy-to-manufacture U-lock holder that can be attached to the existing rack.

Solution Summary

A thin clamp that zip-ties to the frame and tightens the clamp to the rack while also tightening the U-lock.

Driving Constraint

The most important constraint given to this project was speed and manufacturability. At the project's start, the plan was to cast the lock clamp in aluminum. By the end of the project, the manufacturing was changed to 3D printing, which impacted the design.

Iteration

After I determined the initial design to be a thin clamping mechanism that fixes to the bike rack, I 3D printed and tested a total of 11 different iterations. Here are three snapshots of the more major changes that developed through testing.

Solution

While this product is still subject to changes as Boogie Bikes grows, the last stage I worked on zipties to the rear rack and clamps the U-lock down by tightening a knurled knob. This product is currently for sale on the Boogie Bikes website.
